Steve Charles, MD, Chairman, Chief Technical Officer and Founder of MDS is a leading vitreo-retinal surgeon, as well as mechanical and electrical engineer.  Medical products invented by Dr. Charles have produced over $500M in sales over a twenty-year period. Alcon Surgical recently launched the Accurus System for vitreo-retinal surgery based on three Charles patents and $25M of research and development. Accurus is 300% ahead of plan and is the worldwide marketshare leader in vitreo-retinal surgical systems. Charles has been involved with several successful startup high-tech companies. He has performed over 16,000 surgeries, lectured and operated in over 30 countries and authored several leading textbooks. He has fifteen issued patents and many patent applications are in progress. Dr. Charles has been developing dexterity enhancement for over 7 years and has advanced well over $1 million of personal funds to MDS.

 

J. Michael Stuart joined the management team as Chief Operating Officer in January 1999.  In October 1999, Mr. Stuart assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer.  Mr. Stuart has more than fifteen years experience in the medical device industry and has held engineering positions in other consumer products and metal working companies.  He was a founder of Biopsys, and, as Director of Manufacturing, helped to grow the company to annual sales of $30M and a manufacturing staff of 100 employees before Johnson & Johnson acquired Biopsys in 1997 for $310M.   Biopsys manufactured both capital equipment and disposable devices for minimally invasive breast cancer biopsy in its 40,000 ft2. operations. 

 

After the Biopsys acquisition, Mr. Stuart assumed the role of Director of Engineering for EES/J&J and facilitated the technology transfer to other J&J operations and vendors.  During that transfer Mr. Stuart facilitated redoubling the size of the manufacturing operations over a six month period.  Mr. Stuart worked with EES’ vendor network to set up component suppliers for EES using Biopsys’ proprietary technology.  Mr. Stuart was trained as a Six Sigma Blackbelt and participated in J&J’s Process Excellence program.   Mr. Stuart holds seven U.S. and many foreign patents.  Mr. Stuart is the inventor of the ImageDex robots and the ParaDex II industrial robot. 

David Bohman, JD, Vice President of Business Development, received an engineering degree from MIT and a law degree from Northwestern University.  Mr. Bohman has extensive experience with corporate law and the growth of formation stage companies.  Mr. Bohman manages all corporate legal affairs, contractual agreements, and intellectual property rights.
